TOP 10 TIPS FOR YOUR SKINCARE THIS WINTER

The cold weather can wreak havoc on our skin, so it’s important that we give it that little bit of TLC that it requires. During winter, it’s cold and dry (especially here in Canberra) and our skin has different needs to the warmer months. With so much information out there, it can be hard to know what to do, so we have put together our top ten, rapid fire tips and tricks to get you through this season.

Tip 1
Use a cream or oil-based cleanser rather than a foam cleanser. A foaming cleanser can strip skin of its natural oils. In the dry winter months, we need extra moisture on our skin, not less!

Tip 2
Sleep more! Your skin needs more time to survive in the colder months, so getting 8 hours of sleep per night is just as important as your skin care routine.

Tip 3
If you are someone who has dry or dehydrated skin, now is the time to switch up your creams, especially if you suffer from eczema or psoriasis. Switch to a rich moisturiser that focuses on hydration.

Tip 4
Try not to use super-hot water on your face. It can, not only burst blood vessels causing veins, but it can also dry out your skin.

Tip 5
Add a serum to the mix. If you’re new to serums, now is the perfect time to add one to your routine. These are essentially just different types of oils that can be applied right before sunscreen (daytime) or moisturiser (nighttime).

Tip 6
Don’t skip your SPF! If you aren’t a daily SPF user, it’s time to make the change! Forget face masks and eye creams, SPF is one of the most important skin care additions to your routine. Not so fun fact, we lose 1-2% of collagen from our body each year, once we hit our mid 20s, so it’s now time to slip, slop and slap! You don’t need to use that thick, chalky sunscreen. There are plenty of adaptations that are perfect for everyday use.

Tip 7
It sounds obvious, but in case you haven’t been told 1000 times, you need to up your water intake in winter when your skin is drying out. It is just as important to look after your skin from the inside, so lots of water and high amino acid foods are your best friends in the cooler months. Up your intake of foods such as carrot, honey, broccoli and avocado and your skin will thank you!

Tip 8
Try a lip mask! If your lips crack like there is no tomorrow, an ultra-hydrating lip mask might do you wonders. Remember, winter is the season for extra moisture.

Tip 9
Try and make sure the room you spend the most time in sits at room temperature (around 18-22 degrees). With working from home at the moment, this should be a little easier to control.

Tip 10
Use your cleanser for a least 2 minutes. That quick scrub in the shower means you are basically just washing the product off. Spend time rubbing your cleanser into your skin and leave it for at least 2 minutes so it can get into the pores.
